Sensex ends 159 points down on selling pressure, Nifty settles at 7,855; Bharti Airtel, TCS gain

The benchmark BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty plunged 159.21 points and 44.25 points on Monday on account of selling pressure in energy, metal, oil and gas sectors amid lower Asian cues. Sensex closed 0.62 per cent down at 25,678.93, while Nifty 50 index settled 0.56 per cent down at 7,855.05. Investors remained cautious ahead of the central bank meetings in the US and Japan this week for future policy moves. Depreciation in Indian rupee too dampened sentiments.

State-owned fuel retailer BPCL has got green nod for its Rs 694-crore project of developing LPG import terminal as well as storage, bottling and bulk distribution facilities at Haldia Dock Complex in West Bengal.

At present, domestic production of LPG is around 12.38 million metric tonne per annum (mmtpa), much lower than the estimated demand of 18.65 mmtpa for this year. The proposed project aims to boost supply and help achieve the government's target of making LPG available to each household by 2018.

New Delhi: In an effort to make life simpler for income tax payers, the government is looking to reduce the time under which an assessment of an individual's tax returns picked up for random scrutiny is completed to one year.

Currently, assessment of tax returns picked up through a system of computer-driven scrutiny can be completed in two years after the close of the assessment year. This means scrutiny of returns for the financial year 2014-15, which is assessment year 2015-16 that ended on March 31, can be completed till March 2018.

With positive feedback pouring in from passengers on its "Vikalp" initiative, Indian Railways has decided to launch the Alternative Train Accommodation scheme for wait-listed passengers on five new and busy routes on its network.

Under the scheme, wait-listed passengers are allowed to get confirmed seats on the next alternative train if they choose that option while booking tickets online. The scheme, launched on a pilot basis in November last year, is currently applicable on the Delhi-Lucknow and Delhi-Jammu routes.

M&M Financial Services hits 52-week high on good Q4 results

Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services has moved higher to its 52-week high of Rs 295, up 7% on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in early morning trade after the company's gross non-performing assets (NPA) as percentage to total assets declined to 8% in March 2016 quarter against 10.1% in December 2015 quarter. Net NPA declined to 3.2% from 4.6% during the quarter.

Through increased penetration and close follow up efforts the company has been able to increase overall collections and bring down NPA levels resulting in growth of profits, M&M Financial Services said in a statement.
