Lenders reluctant to convert RCom shares at a premium

Lenders reluctant to convert RCom shares at a premium

Lenders saddled with Rs 45,000 crore of Reliance Communications’ debt are not keen to convert it at the higher price announced by the company earlier to its shareholders because the current market price is far below the conversion price. Taking this price into account, the lenders are supposed to convert their debt in lieu of a 51 per cent stake in the company at a total equity valuation of Rs 6,150 crore as compared with the current market value of Rs 4,306 crore.

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), which had quoted a price 18% higher to Tata Motors in the country’s biggest tender for 10,000 electric cars, has agreed to stretch itself and match the price offered by its rival. Accordingly, the company will now be able to supply 150 eVerito sedans in the first phase of the tender while Tata Motors will supply the remaining 350 electric Tigors. It is not immediately clear at this point how the second phase order of 9,500 units will be split between the two companies.

Air India’s debt can remain a drag even after partial offloading

The government knows that if it has to get more suitors for Air India Ltd, it will have to offload a good portion of its gigantic debt. A report in The Economic Times on Monday said that of the airline’s total debt of Rs52,000 crore, about Rs33,000 crore will be transferred to a special purpose vehicle (SPV). The remaining debt, which is against aircraft purchases, will remain on its books, said the report.

Bajaj Auto sales rev up but will margins follow suit?

Bajaj Auto sales rev up but will margins follow suit?

Bajaj Auto Ltd has shifted into the fast lane in September, ending a long ride in the slow lane. Motorcycle sales bounced back while its commercial vehicle (three-wheeler) segment revved up growth. This does signal an improvement in prospects, assuming sales growth sustains, but what is equally important is whether this can translate into higher profit margins.

Domestic motorcycle sales in September comprised 58% of total sales during the month, and rose by 7.3% over a year ago. This has come after 10 successive months of declining sales growth. Better still, Bajaj Auto has regained some lost share—rising from 18% a year ago to 20%—and the management is confident that it can increase further to 25% by end-fiscal year 2018 (FY18).
