The rupee strengthened by 16 paise to 73.39 against the US dollar in opening trade on Thursday supported by weak American currency and positive domestic equities.
At the interbank forex market, the domestic unit opened at 73.42 against the US dollar, gained further ground and touched 73.39 against the US dollar, registering a rise of 16 paise over its previous close.

Shares of Reliance Industries (RIL) hit a record high of Rs 2,218, up 3 per cent on the BSE in the early morning trade on Thursday, with its market-capitalisation (market-cap) nearing Rs 15 trillion. It surpassed its previous high of Rs 2,198.70, touched on July 27, 2020 in intra-day trade.
The stock has gained 5 per cent in the past two trading days after Silver Lake on Wednesday agreed to invest Rs 7,500 crore ($1 billion) into Reliance Retail Ventures (RRVL). Reliance Retail, a subsidiary of RRVL, operates India's largest, fastest growing and most profitable retail business serving close to 640 million footfalls across its around 12,000 stores nationwide.

The Supreme Court on Thursday postponed the hearing on petitions regarding charging of 'penal' interest on deferred EMI payments by banks under the moratorium scheme during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hearing the matter, a bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan has deferred the hearing in the case till September 28 and asked the Centre and Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to come up with a concrete decision. Earlier this month, the central government and RBI had informed the apex court that the moratorium on repayment of loans is extendable by up to two years.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Thursday formally inducted the Rafale aircraft, at Air Force Station in Ambala. The aircraft is a part of 17 Squadron, the Golden Arrows. The first five Indian Air Force Rafale aircraft arrived at Air Force Station, Ambala from France on July 27, 2020. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and French Defence Minister Florence Parly are the chief guests for the event.
This is French Defence Minister Parly’s third official visit to India since 2017 and one of her very first official trips since the outbreak of the COVID epidemic.

With the highest single day spike of 95,735 new cases and 1,172 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, India's COVID-19 tally crossed the 44-lakh mark on Thursday, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The total number of coronavirus cases stand 44,65,864 including 9,19,018 active cases, 34,71,784 cured/recovered/migrated and 75,062 deaths, said the Health Ministry.

Chinese troops, once again, tried to intrude into Indian territory on September 8, amid border tensions between Indian and Chinese troops at Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh.
Two motorboats on the western shore of Pangong Lake were used by the Chinese troops to intrude into Indian territory, but their efforts were unsuccessful as Indian troops were already stationed there.

Bollywood actress Rhea Chakraborty, who was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Tuesday in connection with a drugs case related to the death of Sushant Singh Rajput, has moved a fresh bail plea before a special control. Her earlier bail plea was rejected by a magistrate court on Tuesday.
In the new plea, the actress has claimed that she has not committed any crime and was forced by the NCB to make the incriminatory confession.

Ayodhya: Unknown fraudsters have withdrawn a huge amount of money from the bank accounts of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra, the body that has been tasked with the construction on Lord Ram temple in Ayodhya.
As per sources, the money was withdrawn fraudulently using forged cheques. An FIR has been registered at the Ayodhya Police station against an unidentified person in the matter.

The national capital recorded 4,039 fresh coronavirus COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, the highest single-day spike so far, as the tally breached the two lakh-mark, while the death toll mounted to 4,638. This is the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic that over 4,000 cases have been recorded in Delhi within 24 hours.
Twenty fatalities have been recorded in the last 24 hours, according to the latest bulletin issued by the Delhi health department. The bulletin on Wednesday said the death toll from coronavirus infection has risen to 4,638 and the total number of cases has climbed to 2,01,174.

With over 89,000 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, India's COVID-19 count on Wednesday crossed the 43 lakh-mark, while the death toll is nearing the 74,000-mark as well.
At 9:30 AM on this day, the COVID-19 tally in the country has reached 43,70,129 cases, which include 8,97,394 active cases; 33,98,845 cured, discharged, or migrated patients, and 73,890 deaths.
