The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) is expected to give its views within two weeks over what should be the appropriate ring duration for mobile calls as operators have failed to arrive at a consensus on the thorny issue.

The authority was forced to intervene in the matter after Reliance Jio reduced the ringing time to 20 seconds from 45 seconds, which forced the incumbent operators to complain to Trai and even after several meetings, there was no unanimity on what should be the right duration.

Existence of BSNL is in strategic interest of the nation and the government is looking to resolve issues plaguing it, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Thursday. The law and telecom minister acknowledged that there are problems in the telecom sector, which are being looked upon by the government.

BSNL has introduced the new Bonus Data Offer that will allow select prepaid customers to get more data. The state-owned telecom company will be giving additional data benefits to its customers for a limited period of time. The Rs 429 prepaid plan from BSNL will provide customers with 1.5GB more data, in addition to the 1GB data that they get on a daily basis as per the plan.

A meeting convened by PK Mishra, principal secretary to the Prime Minister, on the revival of Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) on Thursday ended without any conclusion, mainly on the question of whether the revival is possible or not.

It is learnt that the group of secretaries has been asked to study that matter in four-five days.

It seems that decks have been cleared for the administrative allotment of 4G spectrum worth `20,000 crore to BSNL/MTNL as solicitor general (SG) Tushar Mehta is understood to have given a go-ahead to a department of telecommunications (DoT) proposal regarding the same.

Sources say the DoT had sought legal opinion from SG after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) refused to offer its views regarding the matter, terming it an administrative issue.

Reliance Jio may have big plans for its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) services — to be commercially launched on September 5 — but analysts feel the launch of the new service would not be as disruptive for the incumbents as Jio’s mobile services had been when launched three years ago on the same date.

New Delhi: Cash-strapped Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is facing a challenge in crediting staff salaries for this month on August 30, a senior official admitted on Friday.

The official, who did not wish to be named, said that while the telecom company is generating monthly revenue of about Rs 1,400 crore, there are certain liabilities, including interest payments, which have to be taken into account.
