IT & telecom drive net up in Q1, infra still to recover from slowdown

With Maruti, Bharti, HUL and Idea all beating the Street, the mood in corporate India, if not actually, upbeat, is certainly better than it was a few months ago. There is, however, some despondency that goes with the realisation that the core of the economy remains in deep trouble; from Larsen &Toubro to NTPC and Ultratech to Sesa Sterlite, large chunks of industry continue to find the going tough.

India's power supply situation, already under stress from peak summer demand, could worsen further as six NTPC plants with aggregate generation capacity of nearly 17,000 MW face a shutdown due to inadequate coal stocks.

Late on Monday, NTPC Ltd informed the Power Ministry that these coal-based plants — located in the northern, western and southern regions — have “reached at a critical level of coal sufficient only for less than two days”.

NTPC, India’s largest power producer, had approached the Delhi high court to appeal CERC’s February order that revised the incentive structure for state-run power generation companies. The court had asked CERC to consider NTPC’s representation.

Power sector badly needs reforms: World Bank

The World Bank has painted a bleak picture of the Indian power sector. It has put together worrisome findings in its report on the performance of distribution companies (discoms), state electricity regulators and central public sector undertakings (PSUs).

Key reforms mandated by the Electricity Act have not been implemented, corporatisation has been unable to shield utilities from state interference, regulators have not pushed utilities to improve performance and mounting regulatory assets have increased the discoms’ cash-flow problems, said the report More power to India: The challenge of distribution.
