Bengaluru: Even as Walmart Inc. inches closer to a deal to buy a majority stake in Flipkart, the board of India’s largest online retailer will keep Amazon as an alternative suitor in case the proposed sale to Walmart falls through, two people familiar with the matter said.

Amazon.com Inc expects groceries and household products to account for over half of its business in India in the next five years, as it moves to broaden offerings in the segment and foray into areas such as fresh produce.

Amit Agarwal, the India head of Amazon, said in an interview on Friday that groceries and goods such as creams, soaps and cleaning products, were already the largest product category on Amazon in terms of number of units sold in India.

We have just learned that the median salary of employees at Amazon.com Inc. is $28,446, excluding its chief executive officer and founder, Jeff Bezos. That pitiful number raises an intriguing question: Is Amazon a high-paying tech company or a low-wage retailer?

“Both” is the obvious answer, but to this Amazon aficionado that answer is incomplete.

Bengaluru: Amazon India is the fastest growing marketplace in India and the most visited site on both desktop and mobile in the country, according to Amazon founder and chief executive officer (CEO) Jeff Bezos.

In a letter to shareholders early on Thursday, Bezos cited data from market analytics firms comScore and SimilarWeb to highlight Amazon’s dominance in India.

E-commerce giant Amazon has silently launched a web browser for Android devices in India called ‘Internet’ which it claims is fast, doesn’t occupy much storage space on a user’s device and does not collect private data like other browsers.

The browser, which has been available on the Google Play Store since March, has just over a hundred installs so far.

BENGALURU: Showing a clear intent to push its global selling business from Indian merchants, Amazon has now opened the Australian market for local sellers. With the addition of Australia, Indian merchants can now sell to 11 international markets, including the US, Canada and Europe.

Globally, cross-border sales by small-and medium-sized businesses on Amazon grew more than 50% last year, with Indian sellers clocking 200% growth, Eric L Broussard, Amazon VP and head (international seller services), said.

Flipkart Online Services Pvt, the country’s leading e-commerce company, is leaning toward selling a controlling stake to the Bentonville, Arkansas-based company, rather than Amazon, because of the greater certainty in such a deal, according to people familiar with the matter.

Powered by Google's artificial intelligence-based Assistant, the 'Home' and 'Home Mini' are priced at Rs 9,999 and Rs 4,499, respectively. The speakers will go on sale via Flipkart and at over 750 retail stores.

New Delhi: The possible coming together of online retailers Amazon and Flipkart is likely to face close scrutiny on competition issues as the combined entity will be a dominant player in the fast growing Indian e-commerce market, according to experts.

While there is no formal announcement from any quarter on the possible multi-billion dollar deal, reports indicate that discussions involving Flipkart and Amazon are going on.
