Maruti jams up industry sales growth rate

A double-digit decline in sales of the country’s largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki, pulled down the growth of the domestic passenger vehicle industry to sub-three per cent in June. The industry’s sales had grown six per cent in June last year. The May 2016 growth was identical.

June was a mixed bag and growth was limited to Hyundai, M&M (Mahindra and Mahindra), Tata Motors, Renault, Ford, and Nissan. The surprise element was Toyota, with its first double-digit growth in more than a year. All these companies have launched one or more new products in the past one year.

Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest car maker, has seen its first double digit monthly sales decline in recent history as it lost production due to disruption in component supply and a maintenance shutdown. The company’s sales in the domestic market slipped 10.2% in June, while exports saw a deeper cut of 45%. The impact of decline in Maruti’s domestic sales will reflect in the overall industry’s performance during June as the Delhi-based company enjoys a 48% market share.

Country's largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) said, on Tuesday, it is ramping up production of premium hatchback Baleno to meet the current demand and reduce waiting period.

The company also said that its Japanese parent Suzuki Motor Corp is expected to start pilot production at the Gujarat plant in the January-March quarter next year.

Auto component maker Subros Ltd, which had to halt production at its Manesar plant after a fire broke out last month, on Saturday, said it has resumed full supplies to Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) from the company's other facilities in Noida, Pune and Chennai.

"Further, the company is working on fast-track basis to re-build the Manesar facilities so as to commence production in phased manner," it said.

In a move to strengthen its research & development (R&D), the country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) has said that 40% of its proposed capex of Rs 4,400 crore will be towards new product development. The company's Rs 2,000 crore R&D and testing facility at Rohtak will give further boost to the company, said a senior executive.

In a recent investors call, the company said some of the projects have got deferred to next year. So, the company has proposed a budget of Rs 4,400 crore and 40% of that will be deployed towards new product and development. Capex in 2015-16 was Rs 2400 crore.
