Hyundai Motor Q2 profit slides 24 pct on weaker foreign sales

South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co said its net profit slumped for the sixth quarter in a row, in line with forecasts, as weak sales in key markets like China and the United States and the won’s strength continue to shackle the automaker.

The firm, which with affiliate Kia Motors ranks fifth in global auto sales, said on Thursday its net profit fell 24 percent to 1.7 trillion won in April-June from 2.2 trillion won a year earlier. That matched the average estimate of 14 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Aiming for a dominant position in the mass-market sports utility vehicle (SUV) segment in India, Korean auto major Hyundai today launched Creta with price starting at Rs 8.59 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi).

Creta is being launched globally for the first time in India. The roll-out of the five-seater SUV in the country would be followed by launches in other international markets.

Mumbai: Maruti Suzuki India Ltd will export a premium compact car, which it expects to launch this year, to Japan, competing with Ford Motor Co. to become the first car maker to sell a made-in-India automobile in a first-world market.

The plans to export the car, code-named YRA, were revealed by two people familiar with the matter, speaking on condition of anonymity. A spokesperson for Maruti said in an email that the company would not comment on future plans.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) today unveiled its new Made-in-India SUV Creta at its facility in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai.

The SUV comes with a “fluidic sculpture 2.0” design. The variants include a petrol 1.6 Dual VTVT and U2 1.4 CRDi and U2 1.6 CRDi VGT diesel engines.

Hyundai Motor India, the country's largest passenger vehicle exporter, is reorganising its export basket with new products. The company says the drive is aimed at maintaining its leadership in exports.

"There is a shift taking place in our portfolio. We are still exporting older models like the Eon, i10 and Accent. But the major thrust is to find opportunities for new models like the Grandi10, Xcent and Elitei20. Our sports utility vehicle, Creta, due for launch this month, will also be exported," said Rakesh Srivastava, senior vice-president and division head (sales and marketing).

Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor, the country's biggest car makers, will next month launch a new product each in the sports utility vehicle segment, a space where neither is well represented. Hyundai is set to launch the Creta on July 21 and Maruti will launch the S-Cross in mid-July.

Technically, the S-Cross is a crossover-a car with features of a sports utility vehicle (SUV)-but it is expected to be positioned against the Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano, Ford EcoSport and the Creta.

Hyundai Motor Co and its sister company, Kia Motors Corp, saw their global annual sales drop 6% and 5%, respectively, in May. Hyundai Motor shares are down about 20% in 2015, making them the worst performer among major global automakers.

South Korean car maker Hyundai Motor India is advancing the launch of its much awaited compact SUV Creta by a couple of months to take advantage of latent demand for the new product from the start of the festive season.

ET learns, Hyundai will be launching the vehicle on 21st of July and the start of production will happen within a fortnight, around 20th June, which is a good two months ahead of plan. The company has already realigned its production to make way for the new compact SUV.

"We are reviewing it," M.K. Chung said when asked, after a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the South Korean capital, according to the news agency.
