Mumbai: Indian equity markets rose the most in nearly two-and-a-half years on Friday, recouping most of the losses from Thursday, in sync with a bounceback in world equities. A a recovery in rupee also helped the sentiment.

The BSE’s 30-share Sensex rose 2.15% or 732.43 points to close at 34,733.58 points, while the National Stock Exchange’s 50-share Nifty closed 2.32% or 237.85 points up at 10,472.50 points.

The BSE benchmark Sensex staged a strong comeback by recovering over 600 points in opening trade Friday following fresh purchases made by domestic investors ahead of key macroeconomic data to be released later in the day, fall in global crude prices and rupee recovery.

The BSE benchmark Sensex crashed over 1000 points while Nifty too reached below 10,200 amid global sell off. At 9:56 AM, Sensex was trading below 823.36 (2.37%) at 33,928.65 while Nifty50 was down by 271.80 (2.60%) at 10,190.85. Around 175 stocks have hit fresh 52-week lows at this point on the BSE. Some of the names include Bank of Baroda, Bharti Airtel, Bombay Dyeing, Central Bank of India, Deepak Fertilisers, Finolex Industries, HAL, HUDCO, Indostar and Nilkamal, among others.

The rupee on Wednesday opened 25 paise up at 75.14 against the US dollar. The domestic unit fell 33 paise on Tuesday to finish at a fresh lifetime low of 74.39 against on high crude oil prices, strengthening of the greenback and unabated foreign fund outflows.

Government bonds on Tuesday declined sharply as the rupee weakened to new lows amid a rise in oil prices as well as tightening US yields.

Benchmark indices turned choppy on Tuesday as investors turned cautious amid mixed global cues.

The benchmark BSE Sensex opened 150 points higher on buying by domestic institutional investors (DIIs) and rupee recovery.

The BSE Sensex fell over 150 points and the NSE Nifty dropped below the 10,300-level in early trade Monday on unabated foreign fund outflow amid weak Asian cues and the weakness in rupee.

Falling for the fourth straight session, the BSE 30-share barometer fell 169.20 points, or 0.53 per cent, to 34,207.79 after hitting a low of 34,106.24.

The BSE Sensex fell over 200 points and the NSE Nifty dropped below the 11,000-level in early trade Wednesday after the rupee dropped to a new low amid sustained foreign fund outflows and surging crude oil prices.

The BSE 30-share barometer fell 231.08 points, or 0.63 per cent, to 36,295.06 after hitting a low of 36,325.15.

The benchmark 30-share BSE Sensex recovered after falling marginally in early trade Monday amid mixed global trends. After slipping over 60 points, the index gained around 46 points to trade at 36,273.54 points.

The broader Nifty index was trading almost flat at 10,920.80.

The Sensex advanced over 150 points and Nifty reclaimed the 11,000 mark in early session Friday as the October derivatives series took off on a strong footing amid positive global cues.
