The benchmark BSE Sensex on Wednesday began the new fiscal year on a promising note by gaining more than 300 points to settle the day at 28,260.14, recording first weekly gain in three weeks while Sun Pharmaceutical Industries and Ranbaxy Laboratories surged ahead of a planned merger.

As many as 189 companies or nearly 13% of the 1,457 NSE -companies missed the March 31 deadline of appointing a single woman director on their boards, according to a compilation by Prime Database.

The number stood at 245 companies as on 4:30pm on March 31. More than 50 companies including Adani Enterprises on Wednesday announced the appointment of women directors, even as many others including some state-run giants lagged behind in getting a female member on their board to comply with a new regulatory requirement.

Markets recovered from day's lows but continued to remain volatile helped by a rebound in bank and information technology shares even as select index heavyweights capped upside gains.

At 2:30PM, the 30-share Sensex was up 6 points at 27,463 and the 50-share Nifty was down 8 points at 8,334.

Benchmark share indices extended losses for the third straight day as investors booked profits at higher levels with ICICI Bank and FMCG majors leading the decline.

The country’s biggest bourse, the National Stock Exchange (NSE), plans an international exchange at Gujarat’s ‘GIFT City’, the country's first proposed international financial services centre.

The exchange signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Thursday with the GIFT City project developers in Ahmedabad, in the presence of Gujarat’s finance minister, Saurabh Patel. NSE’s rival, BSE Ltd, had signed a similar undertaking with the Gujarat government last month.

The changes made by the index maintenance sub-committee are part of its periodic review and will become effective from 27 March, it said. Apart from changes in the Nifty, revisions have been made in 21 other sectoral and theme-based indices of the exchange.
