Andhra Pradesh Education History
Andhra Pradesh is served by more than 20 leading institutes of excellence in higher education. All major arts, humanities, science, engineering, law, medicine, business and veterinary science are offered, leading to first degrees as well as postgraduate awards. Advanced research is conducted in all major areas.
Andhra Pradesh has 1330 Arts, Science and Commerce colleges, 238 Engineering colleges and 53 Medical colleges. The student to teacher ratio is 19:1 in the higher education. According to census taken in 2001, Andhra Pradesh has an overall literacy rate of 60.5%. While male literacy rate is at 70.3%, the female literacy rate however is only at 50.4%, a cause for concern.
The state has recently made strides in setting up several institutes of high quality. International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) and Indian School of Business (ISB) are gaining international attention for their standards. National Institute of Fashion Technology, Hyderabad (NIFT) is well reputed among those interested in a career in fashion.

Andhra University - Vizag
Andhra University, located in Visakhapatnam, is one of the older premier universities in India with a broad focus. It was established in 1925 and shared affiliating responsibilities with the Madras University in the initial years. It was headed by Dr. Cattamanchi Ramalinga Reddy as the Vice-Chancellor from 1926 to 1931 and in a further second term from 1936 to 1949. It was headed by Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan in the interim period.

The andhra university was conceived on the lines of the noted educationalist, newman's ideal university The University contains two sections, the South Campus, housing the Arts, Humanities, and Sciences departments along with the administrative block, and the North Campus (established in 1962), comprising the Engineering college.
The University also has campuses outside Visakhapatnam to meet demand for post-graduate education. Campuses are located in the districts of Srikakulam, East Godavari, West Godavari and Vizianagaram. An earlier campus at Guntur City, established in 1967, became Acharya Nagarjuna University in 1976.

Acharya Nagarjuna University
The university is an outgrowth of a Post-Graduate Centre of Andhra University, which was established in 1967 in the Nallapadu area of Guntur City. The Centre gained affiliating university status in 1976, and opened with ten post-graduate courses.The university is named after Acharya Nagarjuna, the pro-founder of the Madhyamaka path of Mahayana Buddhism.The Madhyamika-karika testifies to the historicity to their author Nagarjuna, the great Buddhist philosopher, who extolled the path of Prajnaparamita. He wrote the Karika in order to expound the basic teaching of the Prajnaparamita-sutras. The recent archaeological discoveries at Amaravati corroborate to certain extent the broad facts about Nagarjuna's life on which his traditional biographies agree.

Osmania University - Hyderabad
Osmania University, established in 1918, is the seventh oldest in India, the third oldest in south India and the first to be established in the erstwhile princely state of Hyderabad. About Us
Dr.B.R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU), formerly known as Andhra Pradesh Open University, is located in the city of Hyderabad. With a wide network of 152 study centers spread throughout the state of Andhra Pradesh, the University has for its motto "Education at Your Doorstep". The University, the first of its kind in the Country was brought into being through an act of Andhra Pradesh State Legislature in August,1982.
Dr. BRAOU follows a multi-media teaching-learning approach which broadly comprises self-learning print material, supported by audio, video lessons and regular broadcast of lessons through All India Radio. From November, 1999 the University started Telecast of Video lessons through Doordarshan Regional Channel. On Sundays the University has Interactive Teleconferencing on the Regional Channel of Doordarshan.
