History
Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Anantapur, came into existence on July 25, 1981 fulfilling a silent demand and a long cherished dream of the people of Rayalaseema.The University is named after a great patron of learning and the arts, Sri Krishnadevaraya, of the glorious Vijayanagara empire of the sixteenth century. |

The University is an offshoot of the erstwhile Postgraduate Centre of Sri Venkateswara University started in 1968. Subsequently in 1976, the S. V. U. Postgraduate Centre attained autonomous status. In 1987, with a capital outlay of Rs. 1.2 crores, Sri Krishnadevaraya Institute of Management was started with funding from the UGC. In 1988, the University which was originally a unitary, residential institution, became a full-fledged affiliating University.
Yet another landmark in the history of the University is that the Postgraduate Centre at Kurnool under the jurisdiction of Sri Venkateswara University was made over to Sri Krishnadevaraya University in 1993. Thus the University has an academic history of 33 years. Situated in rural environs in an extensive campus of over 500 acres of land, the University has ample scope for development as also an infrastructure which includes a University Science Instrumentation Centre, a Computer Centre, a Health Centre, a Gymnasium, an Outdoor Stadium, an Auditorium and adequately built up space to accommodate departments of studies, laboratories, hostels, and housing for the staff, teaching and non-teaching.

The University has a Central Library. It has a rich collection of over 97,000 books, periodicals, charts and other reading materials. It has a collection of 14,000 back volumes of periodicals. It subscribes to 141 periodicals of which 28 are foreign periodicals. In addition, as many as 65 reading room journals are subscribed by the Library. It makes special provision in its budget for resource materials for competitive examinations preparation. IX Plan allocations amounting to Rs. 35 lakhs have been utilized in a phased manner for a further updating of the library. The Library has entered the networking era by acquiring the INFLIBNET facility to offer more wide-ranging services to its users and to focus on the expansion of the knowledge base. Yet another important feature of the library is that it maintains a textbook collection for SC/ST students.

| Affiliated Colleges:
There is a constituent University College at SKU PG Centre, Kurnool. There are 91 Colleges affiliated to the University of which 6 are Women's Colleges, 12 Colleges of Education, 3 Oriental Colleges, 2 Colleges of Law, and one College of Engineering with a total student strength of about 52000. Sixteen affiliated Colleges offer Postgraduate Courses. Select Colleges offer Restructured Courses stressing Job orientation. Six Colleges have applied for the autonomous status, which is under active consideration.

The motto of the University is "Vidyaya Amrutha Masnute" . It is from Isa Upanishad and conveys the message that one attains immortal wisdom through knowledge.
The Sudarsana Chakra in the University Emblem is a symbol of light destroying darkness and pride. The Nandi and Ratha are from the seal of the great Vijayanagara Empire, the Golden Age of Sri Krishnadevaraya. They symbolize fullness of life and endless pursuit of perfection, which are the objectives of this University.
