Tirunelveli: An Introduction |
Tirunelveli or Nellai in Tamil Nadu, is a 2000 year old city located on the west bank of the only perennial river of the south, the Tamraparni. It grew into prominence during the Pandya Regime and served as their capital for some time.The city along with its twin town Palayamkottai is also one of the oldest Christian centres in Tamil Nadu. The city surrounded by paddy fields is known for its reed mats, palm handicrafts, palm sugar and temples especially the Kanthimathi Nellaiyappar Shiva temple after which the city is named.

Manjolai Hills :Located between elevations ranging from 1000 to 1500 Metres, the Manjolai area is set deep within the Western Ghats within the Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve in the Tirunelveli District. Sankarankoil :Sankarankovil is a municipality in the Tirunelveli district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.The temple at Sankarankoil depicts Hari and Hara as one God. There is a deity named Sankara Narayanan, which is half Lord Shiva and half Lord Vishnu. There is another deity, named Avodai ambal or Gomathi Ambal, after whom the temple is named; it was built by Ukrama Pandiyan in 900 AD. Sacred sand is available, which is believed curative by some. | Agastya Mala :Agathiyar Malai (also known as Agastyarkoodam or Agasthyakoodam) is a 1,868 metres (6,129 ft) peak within Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala in the Western Ghats of South India. The mountain lies on the border between the Indian states of Kerala (in Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram District) and Tamil Nadu (in Kanyakumari district, Tirunelveli District). The perennial Thamirabarani River originates from the eastern side of this hill and flows into the Tirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu. |

Designed in Hindu temple pattern, this dargha attracts not only the muslims but the people belonging to different religion. The customs performed here is also similar to that of Hindu tradition. The nerchai distributed among the devotees is the holy ashes obtained from tamarind bark, ghee and flowers. Besides offering fruits for the worship, sheep and fowls are also sacrificed here. |
